SAC

Canvas is the online learning platform used by Mt. San Antonio College, and it is one of the most important tools you will use throughout your time as a student. Whether you are taking a fully online class, a hybrid class, or a traditional in-person class, your instructor will use Canvas to share course materials, collect assignments, and communicate with you.

When you log in to Canvas at canvas.mtsac.edu, you will see your Dashboard — a visual overview of all the courses you are currently enrolled in. Click on any course to enter that course’s homepage. Every Canvas course is organized by the instructor, but most include the same key sections: Home, Modules, Assignments, Grades, Discussions, and People.

The Modules section is your most important starting point. Modules organize the course week by week or topic by topic, grouping together readings, videos, lecture notes, and assignments. Always check the Modules section first to understand what you need to do each week.

To submit an assignment in Canvas, click on Assignments in the course menu, then click on the specific assignment. Read the instructions carefully, and when you are ready, click Submit Assignment. You can upload a file (such as a Word document), type directly into a text box, or submit a website link, depending on what your instructor requires. Always check the due date before submitting — Canvas records the exact time of each submission.

The Grades section shows you all of your scores and instructor feedback. Check it regularly so you always know your current standing in the course. If you have a question about a grade, you can send your instructor a message through Canvas’s Inbox feature, which works similarly to email.

Canvas also has a mobile app, available for both iPhone and Android, which allows you to check announcements, view assignments, and receive notifications about your courses from anywhere.

ARTICLE 2 Using Zoom for Online Classes and Meetings

Zoom has become one of the most widely used communication tools in education and the workplace. Since the rise of online and hybrid learning, many Mt. SAC courses use Zoom for live class sessions, office hours, group projects, and study sessions. Learning to use Zoom effectively will help you succeed in your online classes and prepare you for virtual meetings in your future career.

To join a Zoom meeting, you will need the Meeting ID and, in many cases, a password provided by your instructor or meeting host. You can join through the Zoom website (zoom.us), the Zoom desktop app, or the Zoom mobile app. Most instructors also post a direct Zoom link in Canvas under each week’s module or on the course homepage.

When you first join a meeting, you will be prompted to turn on your microphone and camera. In a class setting, it is generally expected that you turn on your camera — it shows the instructor that you are present and engaged. However, follow your instructor’s specific instructions, as some may allow cameras to be off.

Good Zoom etiquette is very important. Mute yourself when you are not speaking to prevent background noise from disrupting the class. Use the Chat feature to ask questions or respond to the instructor without interrupting. Raise your hand using the Reactions button if you want to speak. If you need to step away briefly, you can turn off your camera and use the Status feature to let the host know.

Zoom breakout rooms are a commonly used feature in language classes. Your instructor may send you and a few classmates into a breakout room to practice a dialogue or work on a group activity. You can return to the main session when the activity is complete or when the instructor recalls everyone.

Both Canvas and Zoom are tools that become easier and more comfortable the more you use them. Take time to explore each platform, and do not hesitate to ask your instructor or the Mt. SAC Help Desk for assistance when you need it.

💬 DIALOGUES

DIALOGUE 1 A First Week on Canvas

Speaker

Dialogue

Student (Helena)

Professor Kim, I am having trouble finding the homework assignment for this week. Most instructors also provide a direct link in Canvas that takes you directly into the meeting with one click.

Q4. What is Zoom netiquette, and name three rules for participating in a Zoom class? A: Zoom netiquette refers to the standards of respectful and professional behavior during video calls. Three important rules are: (1) Mute yourself when you are not speaking to avoid background noise; (2) Turn on your camera to show the instructor you are present and engaged, unless instructed otherwise; and (3) Use the Raise Hand or Chat features to ask questions rather than interrupting the speaker.

Q5. What are Zoom breakout rooms, and how might your instructor use them in a language class? A: Zoom breakout rooms are smaller, separate virtual rooms that the host creates within a Zoom meeting to divide participants into groups. In a language class, the instructor might send students into breakout rooms to practice a dialogue in pairs, discuss a reading in small groups, or complete a group exercise. Students return to the main room when the activity is finished or when the instructor ends the breakout session.

Part 1: Typing via https://typingtest.com Part 2: Learn with https://anton.app Part 3: Learn with our Canvas LMS and Zoom online

["post-21","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
