Step 2: Lesson 1: Finding Reliable Information Online
Finding Reliable Information Online
What Makes Information Reliable?
When doing research online, it’s important to know that not everything we read on the internet is true. Just like we wouldn’t believe everything a stranger tells us, we shouldn’t believe everything we read online. Here’s how to find information you can trust!
The FACTS Method
Remember the word FACTS to help you check if information is reliable:
F – Find the author
- Who wrote this?
- Is the author an expert?
- Can you find information about them?
A – Age of information
- When was this written?
- Is it up to date?
- Has anything changed since then?
C – Check the website
- Is it from a trusted site (.edu, .gov, .org)?
- Does the website look professional?
- Are there lots of ads or pop-ups?
T – Think about other sources
- Can you find the same information on other websites?
- Do other trusted sources say the same thing?
- Ask your teacher or librarian if you’re unsure
S – Spot mistakes
- Are there spelling or grammar errors?
- Do the facts match what you already know?
- Does anything seem too good to be true?
Practice Activity
When you find information online, ask yourself these questions:
- Who wrote this?
- When was it written?
- What website is it from?
- Can I find this information somewhere else?
- Does it seem correct?
Remember!
- Not everything online is true
- Take your time to check sources
- Ask for help when you need it
- Use multiple sources
- Trust your instincts – if something seems wrong, it probably is.
