SKILL 18: PROVIDES FOOT CARE ON ONE FOOT<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

  1. Introduce yourself and explain the procedure to the patient.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Provide privacy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Perform hand hygiene<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Get water and check water temperature for safety.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Put on gloves.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. Fill a foot basin with warm water and place it on a flat surface with a barrier underneath. Have the patient check the water temperature by placing their hand in the basin or putting a wet washcloth on the back of their hand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. Remove their socks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  8. Immerse their feet in warm water for 5 to 20 minutes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  9. Use water and a soapy washcloth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  10. Wash each foot and between the toes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  11. Rinse the entire foot with the wet washcloth, including between the toes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  12. Dry the foot thoroughly, including between the toes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  13. Ask the patient if they would like lotion. If applying lotion, wear gloves.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  14. Massage the lotion over the foot but avoid applying any lotion between the toes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  15. Wipe off any excess lotion with a dry towel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  16. Replace the socks or preferred footwear.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  17. While wearing gloves, empty the equipment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  18. Rinse the equipment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  19. Dry the basin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  20. Dispose of soiled linen in a laundry hamper.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  21. Remove the gloves, turning them inside out.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  22. Ensure the bed is low and locked.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  23. Place the call light or signaling device within reach of the patient.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
