SKILL 10: FEEDS PATIENT WHO CANNOT FEED SELF<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

  1. Introduce yourself and identify the patient.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Explain the procedure to the patient.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Perform hand hygiene.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Verify the name on the diet card matches the patient.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Verify the diet, diet texture, and liquid consistency matches the diet card.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. Position the patient in an upright position, at least 45 degrees.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. Place a clothing protector on the patient if desired (e.g., a paper or cloth towel or a large napkin).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  8. Ask the patient if they would like mouth care before eating.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  9. Assist the patient to clean their hands before feeding using sanitizer or soapy and wet washcloths.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  10. Position self in a chair at eye level facing the patient.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  11. Describe the foods and fluids being offered to the patient.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  12. Offer small amounts of food at a reasonable rate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  13. Offer fluids frequently.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  14. Allow the patient time to chew and swallow.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  15. Wipe the patient’s face whenever necessary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  16. Continue to alternate foods and fluids until the patient indicates they are full.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  17. Clean the patient’s face and hands.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  18. Ask the patient if they would like mouth care.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  19. Leave the patient with their head elevated at least 30 degrees.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  20. Ensure the bed is low and locked.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  21. Place the call light or signaling device within reach of the patient.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
