SKILL 4: ASSISTS WITH USE OF BEDPAN<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

  1. Introduce yourself and explain the procedure to the patient.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Provide privacy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Lower the head of the bed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Perform Hand hygiene<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Put on clean gloves.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. Turn the patient and place a barrier (e.g., a towel, waterproof soaker pad, disposable pad) under their buttocks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. Position the patient on the bedpan correctly. The deeper portion of the bedpan should be directed toward their toes, and the patient should be centered on the bedpan.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  8. Remove the gloves and perform hand hygiene.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  9. Raise the head of the bed to a comfortable level.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  10. Cover the patient with linens or a bath blanket.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  11. Leave toilet tissue or wipes within reach of the patient.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  12. Leave the call light within reach of the patient.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  13. Wait nearby allowing for patient privacy<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  14. When the patient signals, return and assists the patient to perform hand hygiene in bed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  15. Perform hand hygiene<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  16. Lower the head of the bed to a comfortable level.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  17. Put on clean gloves.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  18. Gently remove the bed pan.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  19. Discard the soiled linen in the designated laundry hamper.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  20. Assist with perineal care.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  21. Empty the bedpan into the toilet.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  22. Rinse the equipment used and empty the rinse water into the toilet.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  23. Remove the gloves, turning them inside out.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  24. Ensure the bed is low and locked.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  25. Place the call light or signaling device within reach of the patient.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
