SKILL 4: ASSISTS WITH USE OF BEDPAN
- Introduce yourself and explain the procedure to the patient.
- Provide privacy.
- Lower the head of the bed.
- Perform Hand hygiene
- Put on clean gloves.
- Turn the patient and place a barrier (e.g., a towel, waterproof soaker pad, disposable pad) under their buttocks.
- Position the patient on the bedpan correctly. The deeper portion of the bedpan should be directed toward their toes, and the patient should be centered on the bedpan.
- Remove the gloves and perform hand hygiene.
- Raise the head of the bed to a comfortable level.
- Cover the patient with linens or a bath blanket.
- Leave toilet tissue or wipes within reach of the patient.
- Leave the call light within reach of the patient.
- Wait nearby allowing for patient privacy
- When the patient signals, return and assists the patient to perform hand hygiene in bed.
- Perform hand hygiene
- Lower the head of the bed to a comfortable level.
- Put on clean gloves.
- Gently remove the bed pan.
- Discard the soiled linen in the designated laundry hamper.
- Assist with perineal care.
- Empty the bedpan into the toilet.
- Rinse the equipment used and empty the rinse water into the toilet.
- Remove the gloves, turning them inside out.
- Ensure the bed is low and locked.
- Place the call light or signaling device within reach of the patient.
- Perform hand hygiene
