Module 10 Vocabulary Practice Sentences<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Temperature<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The patient was <strong>afebrile<\/strong>, which means he had no fever or elevated temperature.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The nurse assistant measured the temperature in the patient&#8217;s <strong>axilla<\/strong> (armpit) using a digital thermometer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In most hospitals, temperatures are recorded in <strong>Celsius<\/strong>, where normal body temperature is 37 degrees.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some facilities still use together.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"46\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Acute pain<\/strong> is severe pain that comes on suddenly and needs immediate attention.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Chronic pain<\/strong> lasts for a long time and affects the patient&#8217;s daily activities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Phantom pain<\/strong> occurs where a limb or body part has been removed but the patient still feels pain there.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pain scales<\/strong> help patients rate their pain level from 0 (no pain) to 10 Sometimes we also need to check the apical pulse by listening to the heart directly with a stethoscope. Any other symptoms?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jennifer:<\/strong> Yes, I noticed some cyanosis around his lips, and his breathing seems shallow. Sometimes he has periods where he stops breathing completely for a few seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Doctor:<\/strong> Those periods without breathing are called apnea. The shallow breathing and cyanosis are concerning. Let me check your TPR &#8211; that&#8217;s temperature, pulse, and respiration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ms. Williams:<\/strong> Why do you check all those when I&#8217;m just having pain?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Roberto:<\/strong> Pain affects all your vital signs. Your pulse is 95 &#8211; a bit elevated, probably from the acute pain. Your breathing is also slightly faster at 22 per minute. Temperature is normal at 98.4\u00b0F, so you&#8217;re afebrile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ms. Williams:<\/strong> Will chronic pain affect my vital signs too?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Roberto:<\/strong> It can, but usually not as much as acute pain. I&#8217;ll let the nurse know about your pain level so we can help you feel more comfortable.
